Education & Training


The BSGA has taken a leading role in the development of a wide range of structured educational and training programmes designed to equip and qualify workers for their roles in modern sign making. Most training is carried out "on the job", but the schemes are supported by a National Training Organisation and by many local colleges.

The Qualifications

National Vocational Qualification (NVQs)/Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs).

Training, assessment and qualifications are available in the following occupations:

Signmaker
Sign Designer
Sign Specifier
Electrical Technician
Manufacturing Technician
Technical Sales
Quality Technician
Quality Technician
Estimator
Process Planner
Site Surveyor
Project Manager
Contract Manager
Installation and Maintenance Supervisor

NVQs/SVQs are awarded at a variety of levels. The following qualification levels are available:

Administration – Levels 1 – 3
Signmaking – Level 2 and Level 3
Supervisory/Management – Level 4.

Qualifications can be gained over any period to suit the employee and the employer.

Foundation Modern Apprenticeships

Scheme supported by the BSGA designed to help bring suitable young people in to the industry and provide them with a complete training framework leading to NVQ Level 2.

Advanced Modern Apprenticeships

Targeted at 16 – 18 year olds this is a government sponsored scheme which operates over a period of approx. 4 years and is designed to lead to an NVQ Level 3 qualification.

Financial assistance with training costs may be available to businesses which operate these schemes.
