Applelec’s Management Training programme

Applelec sent staff members Lee Hemmings, Mark Coulson, John Dunster and Wayne Ramsden on the management training programme run by West Yorkshire based provider Fathom Learning. Involving a series of workshops, the course was designed to aid company growth by developing internal staff that had recently been promoted or had taken on greater staff management responsibilities.

Ian Drinkwater explains: ‘As Applelec has grown in recent years we have promoted staff to a level where they may be managing 15 or more colleagues without having had any management training. We thought it was unfair to expect them to continue without any clear support or guidance and approached a local training provider to create a bespoke series of workshops that would be relevant to our staff and internal disciplines.’

The workshops took place bi-weekly for a period of six months with trainer led sessions covering: successful management and resource management; operations and results or ‘outcome focussed management’; building a dynamic team with collaboration and team leadership; improving people with conflict and poor performance resolution; strengthening staff capabilities to deliver high performance.

A large segment of the programme involved the team working towards a certificate in ‘Developing Coaching Skills for the Workplace’. This work covered the final two months of coursework before conclusions and final assessments took place.

Lee Hemmings, who participated in the course, said: ‘I was recently promoted to Senior Projects Co-ordinator which has brought greater responsibilities in managing project activity across the company. The management training programme involved a very focussed series of workshops which I hope will help my development at Applelec.’

The course was completed in December 2013 when certificates were awarded.
