The centre is currently undergoing a £3.6 million refurbishment and has been renamed ONE NK. As part of phase three of the works, North Kesteven District Council (NKDC) contacted Phil Crow, who was the official photographer for the British Cycling National Road Championships in Lincolnshire in June to ask if they could use some his images in the new virtual cycling studio.
Leisure and Client Services Manager at NKDC Mike Lock said the wall coverings have been enthusiastically received by everyone who has seen them – from the elite cyclists who feature on them and Ian Emmerson OBE, the event organiser, through to the regular users of the facilities and sports instructors.
“From start to finish it was a pleasure to work with Phil and, through him, DoubleRed Print, to achieve a very special and unique atmosphere within the cycling studio which the users themselves tell us inspires them in their participation and activity,” said Mike.
“Phil instinctively knew what we were looking to achieve and delivered an excellent result to specification.
“The design works perfectly despite the limitations of the space and the challenge of working around the various ducts, sockets and extrusions and the images are invaluable in creating a vibrant, active and inspirational environment in which to exercise and aspire to compete in the forthcoming Lincoln Grand Prix. We are incredibly pleased and proud of them.”
Phil explained: “The images were carefully chosen and designed to immerse any budding cyclist into the world of pro cycling, inspiring them to enjoy and achieve within the virtual cycling classes.
“Once I had designed the walls and all the mock-ups were approved, DoubleRed Print then output the files onto digital wall coverings which had been cut to fit the exact dimensions of the studio.”
Matt Ryder from DoubleRed Print said: “Since we became part of the Allen Signs team we have been able to offer a complete print and installation service as we have all the necessary expertise in house.”
The new state-of-the-art studio was unveiled at the launch of the 2016 Lincoln Festival of Cycling in front of an audience of special guests including professional cyclists and the Leader of NKDC, Cllr Marion Brighton OBE.
