Tees Valley Arts is a government funded organisation working across the five boroughs of the Tees Valley to encourage creative participation with people of all abilities, ages and backgrounds. It has been the orchestrator of numerous bespoke creative activities across the region, which are delivered by freelance artists using many different art forms.
In this case, the organisation has been working with Vicky Holbrough, who has over 15 years’ experience working across the North East and specialising in drawing, print making and sculpture. The latest in a long line of interesting projects for the artist, Vicky contacted Signs Express to assist with bringing her designs to life and installing them on the Geneva Bridge in South Park, Darlington.
This project coincides with the rapid expansion of Signs Express (South Durham), to encompass the Teesside territory and grow its customer base dramatically. Daniel Pickersgill, owner of Signs Express (South Durham & Teesside), stated that, “It is an honour to work with local artists, as this allows us to promote local talent and this project in particular has enabled us to improve a prolific bridge in the area. We still have one more bridge to decorate with Vicky’s eye-catching designs and we look forward to this second stage of the project greatly as it is quirky.”
The bridges are part of a heritage trail that meanders through the park and the artwork on these bridges has been inspired by the wildlife of the North-East’s rivers. The project has been launched in a bid to encourage people to reconnect with the River Tees.
Vicky Holbrough had this to say about the project, “From first enquiries through to print and installation Signs Express has been supportive, thoughtful and efficient in helping me realise a commission for a piece of public art in Darlington. Working to create a piece of art for public spaces is often not straightforward and the work has to meet the needs of the brief as well as being sensitive to the environment and site conditions, all of which Signs Express has considered in their approach.”
