Signmaking - the Business and Learning Model
Developing a standard, industry relevant approach to training: Walsall College has established a number of partnerships with business and organisations representing the sign making industry to promote develop and deliver training within the sector that meets industry standards and provides national qualifications as well as developing skills of those currently within the industry. The aim of these partnerships is to develop a standard, industry relevant approach to training, which will help improve the skill set of professionals across the sector.

Modern skills, techniques and technologies: Clive Mitchell, a founding member of the Walsall College Sign Making Academy, has worked with a number of organisations, to ensure that the sign making provision offered by Walsall College exceeds the needs of todays fast-moving sign industry. As a result of this collaboration, modern skills, techniques and technologies are an integral part of all relevant courses.
Meeting the Industry needs: In his support and advisory capacity, Clive is part of a specialist team who guides industry partners on all matters relating to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). He also gathers crucial feedback on their requirements and issues, from trainers within the sector. Such partnerships are highly effective and benefit all parties; they allow the College to design solutions that meet industry needs.
Walsall College also works closely with local, regional and national partners in the industry. Their goal is to develop a portfolio of sign making courses that meets the needs of all in the industry. Sign makers often need updated training on the latest technologies; something that fits perfectly within Walsall Colleges capabilities.
The College has also made available the service of delivery and assessment of the signmaking National Vocational Qualification at the work place, which has the benefit of delivering the industries national qualification in surroundings that the employees and employers are comfortable with.
Excellence is our name: These strategic partnerships ensure that the sign making courses at Walsall College are of the highest standard, which is confirmed by external appraisers who always rate the Colleges provision within the sector as excellent.
Walsall College has many students, both past and present, from a variety of backgrounds who have completed qualifications successfully. They include Professionals from the sign industry, School leavers, NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) categorised students and Apprentices.
In addition to receiving excellent teaching and gaining industry standard qualifications, students who study at Walsall College undertake modules in Life Skills. These include team work, presentation skills; problem solving techniques and work experience, for those undertaking a full time course.
