Val Hits 100!

Congratulations to Val Hirst and her team at Sign Directions on achieving 100 issues of the magazine.

Val, together with Dawn Seager, launched the magazine in 1995 and it was immediately adopted by the BSGA as its preferred trade journal – and remains so upto the present day.

BSGA President Craig Brown presents a Special Achievement Award to Val Hirst at this year’s Sign Industry Awards to mark her achieving 100 issues.

While Sign Directions has been going for 13 years, Val – and Dawn – have been involved in the sign industry for far longer. Val was Editor of the now defunct “Signs” for five years until the publishers ran into trouble and Val and Dawn decided they were better off on their own.

The Sign Directions team has expanded since those early days, with Maurice Hoare joining as Advertising Director and Mike Connelly, former editor of Sign World joining at Deputy Editor.

“The appeal of Sign Directions as our recommended journal is down to Val’s editorial style,” said Albert Baxter, BSGA Director.

“Unlike some of the other trade journals which seem to survive mostly on regurgitated press releases, Sign Directions has always carried a balance of well-written, pertinent articles, well edited news items and informative features.

“One thing that is particularly noticeable is that the cover is always an industry picture and not an annoying advertisement. Good for you, Val. “The final thing that sets it apart is Val’s own column – funny, opinionated, well-informed, even occasionally feminist, but always a good read.” Here’s to the next 100 issues!
