7. The Amari Craftsman Award
Jointly awarded to English Traditional Signs and the Signs and Décor Company for their work on two Grade II listed buildings in York.

The joint entrants completed projects on the two buildings – one Medieval and the other Georgian – in historic York – returning both to their former glory using a combination of traditional crafts – traditional signwriting, gold leafing and gilding – and more modern technology – vinyl lettering.

Commended – Sunset Signs for a complete traditional shop front for Margaret Forbes Jewellery in Northern Ireland.

8. Digital Sign of the Year
Signs Express for a 220 square metre window display at the Williams Land Rover dealership in Manchester.

Produced in 56 separate panels printed on contravision vinyl and lit by six roof mounted 500W halogen flood lamps. The display brought traffic to a standstill on the Princess Parkway in Manchester – and it’s easy to see why.

Commended – The IS Group for a series of digital images produced for a new Oncology Unit at Alderhey Hospital in Liverpool.

9. Commercial Sign of the Year
Gee Tee Signs won the award for a massive signage project at the Gallions Reach Retail Park.

A total of 43 free-standing pylon signs ranging in height from 4m up to 36m – the latter being a central tower featuring an illuminated “crow’s nest” and an aviation warning light. A massive project which combined the signmaking, engineering and constructional skills.

Commended – Sign Express for a very impressive, three dimensional corporate sign for the Met Office headquarters in Exeter.

10. Illuminated Sign of the Year
Butterfield Signs for their new twist on McDonald’s.

The aim was to create a fresher look for the restaurant in Oxford Street and help draw customers through a small and rather unappealing doorway and down a narrow corridor. The illuminated “red glass wall” did the trick.

11. The Altuglas Retail Sign of the Year
Gee Tee Signs (again) for the Next Store at the new Bull Ring Shopping Centre in Birmingham.

Clean and simple – and perfectly in keeping with the glazed frontage of the store – but also exceptionally eye catching. The letters were individually produced from acrylic and mounted on glass screens. The striking halo effect was achieved through the use of self adhesive vinyl lit by metal halide lamps fitted with blue filters.

Commended – Pearce Signs for their work on the development and upgrade of the Tesco Metro brand.

12. The Special Achievement Award
This special award was presented to Russell Signs in recognition of the unique position they hold in the industry.

Russell specialize in the unusual – exemplified this year by the “ER” helipcopter which “crashed” into an advertising hoarding on the busy Cromwell Road in London. Previous winners of the “Craftsman Award”, Russell Signs were singled out by the judges to receive this special award in recognition of their on-going achievements.
