A day in the life of the PCH Manufacturing Sign Shop

PCH Manufacturing Sign Shop produce high quality signage across our city but just how do they do it?

We spoke with the staff in our Sign Shop to find out what it’s really like at the business end of producing quality signage for major events and businesses across the city.

We meet Paul Llewellyn who has over 20 years’ experience in the Sign Shop and across Manufacturing.

Paul said: “In a typical day we will start early and look at the orders that have come in and prioritise which jobs we need to complete first depending on the deadline we’ve been given. Most of the orders we get in are short notice so we need to be on the ball. We had a large order recently for Pirate Weekend on the Barbican and within two hours of receiving the order we’d printed, cut and the signage was ready to be picked up. So we can turn things round pretty swiftly.”

Sharon Rimes, Sign fabrication and Installation Operative continues: “When we get an order we usually visit the site as it gives us a chance to meet our customer, speak to them about their requirements and then look at what equipment we will need before working out a price and confirming the quote.

“We will speak to the customer about when they want the signage delivered and will schedule it in alongside our other orders. We get a lot of repeat business from people who have used us before because they know that we will always deliver on time.”

The Sign Shop has regular work with the local shopping Mall which includes updating the frosted decals: “The Free Wi-Fi signs and gift cards signs you see in the Mall are ours – we have to go out and reinstall them regularly as they tend to get accidentally damaged by passers-by and through general wear and tear.”

Paul tells us about some of the recent projects that PCH Manufacturing have completed: “We’ve just produced a whole lot of road traffic signage for the Plymouth half marathon – for one of our most regular customers who amongst other things organise major events across the city – you’re not quite sure what they’ll ask for next!

“We’re also working on large signs for a business in Chaddlewood as well as producing vinyls for the children’s break out area at a local education academy. We’ve also just produced a nature board for West Park Orchard with artwork produced by our Apprentice Mae Hughes, who is part of our in-house design team at PCH.

“We’re busy all the time with orders and installation – I’m just off now to put the finishing touches on one of our Plymouth Community Homes fleet vehicles – we can do vehicle graphics as well. You name it – we can provide it!”
